Well the fact that thyroid gland is responsible for all metabolic activities of the body must be well known to everyone but it might sound shockingly surprising to hear that people suffering from thyroid issues might be at risk to suffer from knee pain/joint pains. Yes, you have read it right & it’s true. Since, thyroid hormone imbalance leads to poor bone density and sometimes because of overweight (due to thyroid issues) also knee pain may occur.

The association between hypothyroidism and knee pain can be either directly or indirectly. Antithyroid antibodies have impact on inflammation on muscles, joints and to a variable extent on many other tissues.

Let’s us understand this concept in a clear manner

What Exactly Is Thyroid?

The body is controlled by chemicals known as hormones. Hormones are produced in minute quantities by minute organs, but they exhibit great impact on all types of body functions. There are multiple hormones inside a human body which will be directing different functions like how tall a person will grow, how strong the bones will be, how well a person can react to stress and the reproductive ages.

Thyroid can be depicted as one such major gland, which produces a hormone called thyroxin or T4 as it is commonly called. This is well capable to control metabolism and emotional health to a large extent. Also, It’s proven that in women T4 will be in reduced amounts, and with altered metabolism, there is increased musculoskeletal pain in various joints.

There are two conditions of thyroid which may lead to knee pain.  One is Hypothyroid Myopathy & other is Hyperthyroid Myopathy.

Hypothyroid Myopathy:

Hypothyroid Myopathy is associated with muscle weakness, aches, and cramping are common in people with hypothyroidism which leads to weakening of the muscles in the knees thus triggering acute knee pain.

Hyperthyroid Myopathy:

People who are having hyperthyroidism muscle weakness is the signature symptom. Experiencing muscle cramps and aches may occur, they are not as common as they are in myopathy related to hypothyroidism.
