Epilepsy and seizures Epilepsy is seen in 12 out of 1000 people in India. 

What is a seizure? 

Commonly known as fits, it is a sudden electrical disturbance in the nerve cells. 

What is Epilepsy? 

Epilepsy is a condition characterised by two or more episodes of seizures. 

What are the signs and symptoms of seizures? 

  • Abnormal jerky movements
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Frothing from the mouth
  • Involuntary urination
  • Tongue biting
  • Confusion and extreme tiredness after a seizure 

What causes epilepsy or seizure? 

  • Head injury or trauma
  • Genetic disorder
  • Stroke
  • Tumor
  • Birth defect
  • Brain injury during birth
  • Meningitis
  • Uncontrolled fever in children

Can epilepsy be treated? 

Epilepsy can be treated with: 

  • Medicines to control seizures
  • Vagus nerve stimulation
  • Deep brain stimulation
  • Lobectomy
  • Lesionectomy

What are the surgery options? 

  • Disconnective surgery: To cut the paths between the nerves in the brain
  • Resective surgery: To remove the area of the brain that causes seizures.
  • Nerve stimulation: To change the electrical activity in the brain. 

How to prevent seizures? 

  • Get enough sleep
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Avoid flickering or flashing lights
  • Reduce TV/computer time
  • Eat healthy diet
  • Manage stress

How to help a person with seizures? 

Do not panic. Make the person lie down on a flat surface. Remove any sharp objects nearby Ensure there is nothing in the mouth Loosen the clothes around the person’s neck Don’t try to hold the person Once the seizure is over, ask for medical help Call the ambulance if Seizure lasts for over 5 minutes Another episode of seizure begins Person is unconscious even after seizure.
